Indigenous Round celebrates Culture and Community at Cardinals softball event

Orange District Softball Association proudly hosted its Indigenous Round on 28 February 2026 at Jack Brabham Park, bringing together players, families and community members to celebrate Aboriginal culture through sport.

The day included a Welcome to Country by Uncle Neil Ingram, a Smoking Ceremony by Uncle Doug (Ian) Sutherland and a cultural ceremony by the Wiradjuri Wagaldhaany Dance Group. Indigenous artwork was showcased through specially designed playing shirts and awards created by local Aboriginal artists.

The round highlighted the strong connection between sport, culture and community. With around 50 registered Indigenous players participating in the association this season the event provided an opportunity to celebrate culture on the field while strengthening partnerships across the wider Orange community.

Support from RES helped make the day possible, contributing to cultural performances ,Indigenous-designed shirts and awards and other event costs.

Orange Cardinals spokesperson, Tanya French, noted the positive impact RES's support had on the sporting cultural event:

"We sincerely thank RES for supporting this event. RES's contribution enabled us to deliver a meaningful and inclusive Indigenous Round that showcased softball, celebrated culture and strengthened our community."
